        HISTORY OF MORROW PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

In 1963, Atlanta Presbytery envisioned a new Presbyterian Church on the Southside of Atlanta. The 50 Charter Members of Morrow Presbyterian Church began meeting in a house on Lee Street (adjacent to our present building) on January 5, 1964, and was declared a duly constituted congregation of the Presbyterian Church under Atlanta Presbytery on April 5. The first Sunday School classes were held in March. The first Session was elected and met on April 12. The Rev. Frank Havlicek was installed as the first Pastor in May of 1964.

The congregation soon outgrew its small home on Lee Street and the 108 members began planning for a new church building in October, 1965. Ground was broken in April, 1968, and the first service was held in the new facilities at 6171 Huie Drive on February 23, 1969

Rev. Havlicek accepted a church in Panama City, and the Rev. Thomas M. Dews of Charleston, West Virginia, accepted the call to be the Pastor and was installed on May 3, 1970.

The Sunday School began to expand, new classes were formed, and remodeling was already needed. Several Boy and Girl Scout Troops were sponsored by the church and a Young-At-Heart Club (for Seniors) was organized. Due to increased membership, an enlarged sanctuary, a multi-purpose room, and more classrooms were soon required. The first Sunday in the completed facilities was April 10, 1977.   Rev. Dews retired from the Pastorate in April 1982, and is now our Pastor Emeritus.

On March 13, 1983, the Rev. Jerry Tabler, preached his first sermon and was duly installed as Pastor on May 22.   We held a  “Mortgage-Burning Ceremony” on June 7th during the morning worship service.

The Rev. James E. McNaull was called to be Pastor of the church in 1989. He preached his first sermon on November 19 and was installed March 25, 1990. Under his leadership, the church began to flourish and grow again. We are blessed with a strong music program including adult and youth choirs and an orchestra which was formed in September 1993.

In 1993, the congregation planned for an addition and renovation to the facilities. “A Brick and A Prayer” building campaign to finance this project was begun in June. On December 12, ground was broken for an expansion that included an enlarged sanctuary, 6 new classrooms, additional office space, enlarged restrooms, and the special highlight of a steeple. The new facilities were dedicated on October 2, 1994. Stained glass panels depicting different crosses were added to the Sanctuary in December 1988 in memory of Janet Veldsma by her family.

Rev. McNaull accepted a church in Texas, and after a year search, Dr. Earl A. Bland from Covington, Virginia, accepted a call to be our pastor. Dr. Bland preached his first sermon on October 10, 1999 and was installed on November 7, 1999.

In June 2001 the MPC Community Food Pantry opened to the community and in January 2002 and   a bell was installed in our bell tower/steeple. The bell was placed in memory of Dr. Bland’s grandfather and the installation was provided by member Roxie Romine as a memorial for her husband Ernie.

In October 2003 the Sanctuary was painted and new carpet was installed; the Narthex was also redecorated at this time. In November 2003 a cross was installed on the top of the steeple.   It was placed by members Fred & Helen Bell in memory of Helen’s sister.

The next month we held our 1st  Annual “Hanging of the Greens” to decorate the church for Christmas and also held our 1st Annual Church Family Thanksgiving Dinner.

In April 2006, Dr. Bland received a call to Lawrenceville, Ga. and the congregation was blessed to have Dr. Earl Stewart serve as our interim pastor.   September 2006 saw the embrace of the "Purpose-Driven" church.

In May 2008, Rev. Dr. John Callahan Jr. was called to be the pastor of the Morrow Presbyterian Church.
